[the game]

Premise
A strange video game has taken the multiverse by storm - Legend. Even for places that don't have computer technology, the game has managed to insinuate itself in some form. Anyone can play for free, all they have to do is sign up. The game interface handles any and all translation issues for the people who play, so there are no times when people cannot communicate with each other while playing.

Those who join create a character, and are launched into the game's story. They do quests, either with others or by themselves, and gain merit and items and travel through the online world. However, the deeper they get into the plot of the game, strange things start happening in their own world. Is Legend connected to these phenomena, or is there something else going on?

How to Play
There are two systems in place for Legend - online and offline. Online refers to the characters playing in Legend itself, while offline refers to the characters in their home world. Because characters don't spend all their time playing Legend, (or do they?) it's assumed that they have lives offline. As well, Legend has an email system integrated into it, for those worlds that don't have that sort of technology, which means that Legend players can contact each other using the Legend client, but not needing to be logged into the game. There is a forum as well, where news and updates to the game will be posted and characters can interact as well.

All posts related to playing Legend need to be tagged with !online as well as the character's name, and any other relevant information (if it's a quest, or information gathering, or just getting together to whack things with swords). Offline matters need to be tagged with !offline, the world it's occurring on, and any characters involved. Similarly, emails need to be tagged with !email and the characters who are emailing each other. Forum posts should be tagged with !forum but don't need any other tags.

For example:
Luke fon Fabre is playing a character named AMBASSADON. He decides to undertake the 'Become an Hero' quest with a group of friends. The tag list for his post would be: !online, ambassadon, browking, cutelilthing, fastestthing, indignayshun, maaaaaaaster, prettyinblue, quest, songstress

Luke and his teacher Van talk a bit about the quest over email. The tag list for the email post would be: !email, van grants, luke fon fabre

Finally, the group as a whole plans the quest out over the forum. The tag for the post would simply be !forum

Quests and Merit
Anyone can play Legend however they want. There isn't really any concept of "levelling" in the game, however. Rather, quests are undertaken. There are several different types of quests: story quests, race quests, class quests, world quests and limited quests, to name a few. When one completes the objectives of a quest, they gain what is called a merit. The type of merit gained depends on the nature of the quest. Different types and amounts of merits can be cashed in at a merit shop to obtain character enhancements - weapons or items or the like. Rarely, special merits can be obtained that can give character modifications. Merits can also be used to open up locked quests that are not normally available. Some quests are repeatable, while others are not, and others can only be completed by one person ever - meaning there is only one of that particular merit in the entire game!

Interacting in Legend
While playing, characters can interact in a variety of ways. Generally, one says something and thus it can be heard by everyone. They can also choose to [whisper], meaning only one character will hear what is being said, or if they're in a group of people they can use [party] and be heard only by those in their group. There is no way to hear anything that is being said if you are not the one included in the filter, unless you happen to be one of Legend's moderators. There are also a variety of action commands to make one's interactions in Legend a bit more realistic. Players are encouraged to explore any and all possibilities to find out what works and what doesn't. Finally, one can send in-game email to others, provided they are online. If it's not convenient to do an !email post, a short thread can be used instead. The !email tag must be added to the post to indicate there is email within.

Characters can also trade items with each other. There is no real scale for item value in a personal trade, apart from personal preference. Gifting items can also be done if a trade is not desired.

Characters can kill each other, however not within a city as this is considered a crime. Out in levels, it's every man for himself. If you kill someone who is alone, they respawn in the last city they saved at. One cannot obtain items from a person's corpse, as the corpse disappears. Excessive killing of the same person can be considered harassment and moderators encourage victims to report such problems.
